Hi, I’m Kelly, a textile artist based in Waterford, and I specialise in creating bespoke Celtic handfasting cords designed with love and care.
Handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition where a couple’s hands are bound together as a powerful symbol of unity and everlasting love. This ritual, which dates back as far as 7000 BC, is still a cherished part of many modern ceremonies. With hands joined, a cord, ribbon, or Crios is gently wrapped around the couple, symbolising their promises to one another. It’s from this beautiful ritual that the phrase “tying the knot” originated.
A handfasting cord—sometimes called a ribbon, rope, or binding cord—is a decorative piece used to wrap around the couple’s hands during the ceremony, representing their bond and lifelong commitment. Each of my cords is handmade with care, artistry, and a deep passion for detail. My goal is always to create something meaningful, luxurious, and entirely unique to every couple. I live in Waterford with my husband Damien and our two wonderful boys, Teddy and Sebastian. For over a decade, Damien and I have been part of the wedding world as ceremony musicians (you can find us at Something Blue Acoustics). Alongside music, my background is in the arts—I hold a Master’s degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London.
By blending my love for textiles with my experience in weddings, I found my way into creating handfasting cords, and it has become something I truly treasure. Each piece I make feels like an honour, as it becomes part of one of the most meaningful moments in a couple’s journey together.
